City of Fernley and Unincorporated Churchill County

Residents Service Guidelines

Residential Service

Residential service applies to individual homes, buildings with 4 or fewer attached units and mobile or modular homes.  A 96-gallon cart is provided by WM for each individual account. Service includes weekly collection of material in the cart and up to seven 32-gallon bags each weighing less than 50 pounds.

Please place all carts and bags curbside by 6:00 am on your scheduled collection day. Cart lids must be closed and bags tied to prevent windblown litter. Carts should be placed at least two feet apart with lid opening facing the street. Leave three feet of space between carts and parked cars or other objects. As a courtesy to your neighbor, promptly remove carts after service.

Prohibited Waste

Do not place the following materials in your carts:

  • Hazardous waste (products labeled toxic, poison, corrosive, flammable, or irritant)
  • Paint
  • Oil
  • Automotive batteries
  • Tires
  • Hot ashes
  • Cathode-ray tube television and computer screens
  • Infectious waste (including used needles)
  • Dead animals (weighing more than 10 lbs.)

If these materials are found in the cart, it will be tagged with a non-collection notice and will not be serviced. It will then be the responsibility of the resident to make the correction and contact WM for service.

You can recycle your CFL bulbs, batteries and electronics easily. Signup for our Think Green From Home programs by visiting www.thinkgreenfromhome.com to get started.

Maximum Weight Limits

96-gallon carts should not exceed 250 pounds. To avoid exceeding the cart’s weight limitation or causing possible damage to the cart or collection vehicle, do not place rocks, concrete, bricks or dirt inside carts. Any items placed in the cart must fall out easily when the cart is being serviced. Please do not overfill or tightly pack items into the cart.

If the cart exceeds the weight limit, the driver will attempt service and will notify the resident of the problem by leaving a non-collection notice attached to the cart. However, if we are unable to empty the cart, the cart will be tagged and marked as “overweight.” It will then be the responsibility of the resident to make the correction and contact Waste Management for service.

Resident Responsibility for Cart

Each resident is responsible for the proper care and security of his or her waste cart. Customers will be charged to replace carts that are damaged or destroyed other than through normal usage. Please contact Customer Service for cart replacements.
